A lot of the character of this vital Norwich thoroughfare has disappeared within the mists of time… so be a part of us on a journey down outdated Ber Road.

Boisterous Ber Road has a wealthy historical past. Full of outlets, courts and yards, together with faculties, well-known public homes… and as soon as per week the cattle took over once they have been pushed up and down the road to the market and again.

With King Road on the backside and Ber Road on the high, this was the village on the hill. A proud group.

Saturday was THE day of the week in Norwich when the nation got here to the town. Market Day.

The cattle market was held within the centre of Norwich from the 17th century till the 1960s. I keep in mind seeing the cows and feeling sorry for them as they made their manner over the cobbles.

The pictures we share with you as we speak are of a number of the butchers and their households who ran outlets alongside the road. In 1920s and 1930s there have been seven butchers outlets between Bonds (John Lewis) and Horn’s Lane (the place the varsity was), plus 4 or 5 additional alongside.

There was by no means a boring second in outdated Ber Road however let’s not neglect a lot of its residents lived in appalling slums with a communal bathroom and a single faucet.

In the course of the 1930s greater than 35 yards with virtually 300 houses have been flattened. The realm was bombed within the Second World Warfare after which within the late 1950s/60s a lot of the remainder of the realm was pulled right down to make manner for brand new developments and Rouen Street.
